La Basilica-Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime plaude per l’inizio dei lavori di riqualificazione funzionale dell’area di Piazza Euripide.
Piazza Euripide rappresenta un pezzo di storia della devozione della Città di Siracusa verso la Madonna delle Lacrime. Piazza Euripide è stato il primo Santuario all’aperto, che ha permesso ai fedeli di venerare l’Effige miracolosa della Madonnina, che dal 29 agosto al 1 settembre 1953 ha versato Lacrime umane.
A partire dal 19 settembre 1953 – con una cerimonia grandiosa e alla presenza dell’Arcivescovo Baranzini e delle Autorità Civili e Religiose – il Quadretto della Madonnina fu collocato in piazza Euripide su una stele alta 4 metri, che diventò mèta incessante di pellegrinaggi fino al 29 agosto 1968, quando la Madonnina fu traslata nella Cripta dell’attuale Santuario.
“La riqualificazione funzionale dell’area di Piazza Euripide – ha detto il Rettore don Aurelio Russo – è un segno di speranza che affonda le radici nel passato e proietta uno sguardo nel futuro: la Madonnina protegga Siracusa e possa accogliere ancora pellegrini provenienti da tutto il Mondo, liberando l’umanità dal flagello della pandemia”.
