In via degli Orti di San Giorgio al numero 11 si trova l’umile casa dove, nel 1953, i coniugi Iannuso andarono ad abitare dopo il loro matrimonio, e dove si è verificato il prodigio della lacrimazione.
La casa era stata presa in affitto da Angelo Iannuso e Antonina Giusto, una casa umile arredata da cose assolutamente essenziali. Con loro viveva anche la famiglia del fratello di Angelo. Dalla stretta porta d’ingresso si entrava in una stanzetta di pochi metri quadrati, che si apriva su un corridoio, adibito a cucina. Il corridoio portava ad una camera sopra il letto il capezzale raffigurante il Cuore Immacolato di Maria, che era stato donato come regalo di nozze dalla cognata Grazia Iannuso. È proprio questo il quadretto che dal 29 agosto al 1 settembre del 1953 versò lacrime umane.
Dopo l’autorevole parola dell’Episcopato Siculo, fu proposto un progetto che prevedeva di lasciare inalterata la stanza della lacrimazione e di erigere un altare all’esterno per officiare la S. Messa.
Si progettò pertanto la creazione di un oratorio vero e proprio con ingresso da via degli Orti, avente funzione di Chiesa.
Il 29 Luglio 1954, venne acquistata la proprietà che il 29 agosto dello stesso anno divenne luogo di culto.
L’8 Dicembre 1954, con un decreto arcivescovile, la casa di via degli Orti da oratorio divenne chiesa pubblica e decorata del titolo di “Santuario”. Fu un passo fondamentale non solo perché il decreto riconobbe ulteriormente la veridicità della lacrimazione, ma anche perché si diede inizio ai lavori di costruzione di un Santuario più grande della casa di via degli Orti, che rimase sempre il “Santuario originale”.
Il 2 Novembre 1964 S. E. Mons. Karol Wojtyla, Arcivescovo di Cracovia, visitò l’oratorio di via degli Orti, mostrando già un attaccamento particolare verso la Madonna delle Lacrime; ritornò a Siracusa il 5 Novembre 1994 per inaugurare il nuovo Santuario, affermando che era come se stesse tornando da Papa per “ sciogliere un voto”.
La Casa del Pianto è stata restaurata e il 9 marzo 2008 con una solenne celebrazione eucaristica, è stato riconsegnata alla città ed ai fedeli.
Oggi la Casa di Via degli Orti, è un luogo di preghiera e di raccoglimento, in cui è stata anche allestita la ricostruzione della camera nuziale dei Signori Iannuso. Ogni giorno alle ore 8:30 viene celebrata la S. Messa ed ogni 29 del mese da questo luogo parte il tradizionale pellegrinaggio verso il Santuario.
